History of the Southern Journal of Sciences
The scientific journal Southern Journal of Sciences began its journey in 1993 under the name Southern Brazilian Journal of Chemistry. Founded by Professor Lavinel George Ionescu (http://lattes.cnpq.br/7094891971914742), the journal flourished under his leadership until his passing in 2016. During this period, it made significant contributions to research in chemistry and related sciences.
From 2016 to 2022, the editorship was led by Luis A. B. De Boni (http://lattes.cnpq.br/1040006998754753), who maintained the journal's continuity while implementing significant advances. In 2022, as the journal celebrated its 30th anniversary, it underwent a complete reformulation, including changing its name to Southern Journal of Sciences.
2020 - 2022 Reformulation
The 2020-2022 Reformulation marked a significant expansion of the journal's editorial scope to encompass a broader range of scientific fields. During this transformation, all previously published editions and articles received DOIs, enhancing their scientific visibility and traceability. The journal also implemented digital preservation through the Portico platform (https://www.portico.org), ensuring the security and accessibility of its content.
That same year, Professor Walter José Peláez (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6950-5312) from the National University of Córdoba, Argentina was appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief (https://www.sjofsciences.com/server/jornal/2022v1/01_walter_letter_pg_01.pdf). Under his leadership, several innovations were introduced:
- A tool to assist in writing structured abstracts
- An automatic DOI conversion system for APA format references via Crossref
- A new logo and website design improvements
- Active pursuit of new indexing platforms
In 2025, the journal's website underwent a technical update, migrating from HTML to PHP, introducing a more dynamic and interactive navigation menu that enhanced the experience for both readers and authors.
Indexing
The journal is currently indexed in several platforms, including The Keepers, TITLE DOI, ROAD, FATCAT, SUDOC, OPENALEX, and CROSSREF, which has significantly increased its global accessibility and academic credibility.
Historical Statistics and Publication Record
Over its 31-year history (1993-2024), the journal has published 36 editions, averaging 1.2 editions per year. While the current publication frequency aims for two editions annually, there were periods when only one edition was released per year. The journal has published around 180 papers across various scientific fields, with a notable increase in publication volume after 2016.
